Chain link can be spaced a little wider than wood, commonly up to 8 to 10 feet on center, because the mesh is stretched tight in tension and the top rail ties the line posts together. Many local codes cap line-post spacing at 10 feet for chain link.
The terminal posts, at corners, ends, and gates, do the real work of holding tension, so they are set deeper and braced. Getting the line-post spacing and the terminal posts right is what keeps chain link taut instead of saggy and wavy.
Spacing for Slopes, Corners, and Gates
Layout rarely lets you space every post identically. Corners, ends, and gate openings need their own posts wherever they fall, which can shorten the span on either side. On a slope, the fence is stepped or racked, and posts may be placed to follow the grade cleanly.
Gate posts deserve special attention because they carry a swinging load; they are often set deeper and sometimes larger than line posts. Good layout adapts the spacing to the real yard rather than forcing a rigid number.
